Freep Film Festival on Wednesday revealed plans for its 2022 festival, including a return to its traditional spot on the spring calendar.
In 2021, the festival was held in September, a shift largely made in response to the pandemic. The festival’s 2022 dates — April 27 to May 1 — represent a homecoming to the first half of the year, where it had been held since its founding in 2014.
The festival’s film lineup will be announced in the middle of March. As always, the offerings will focus on documentaries, with many of them featuring strong local connections or interest. Previous festivals have included the world or Michigan premieres of films like “12th and Clairmount,” “The Russian Five,” “Boy Howdy! The Story of Creem Magazine,” “White Boy” and “Boblo Boats: A Detroit Ferry Tale.”
A festival hallmark is the engagement activities built around the films, particularly in-depth conversations led by Free Press journalists. Those discussions with filmmakers, film subjects and community members will continue, as will other related activities, including parties, music and free educational events geared toward the filmmaking community.
The 2021 festival included in-person screenings at a variety of venues in Detroit and two suburban locations. It also featured online streaming of most of the lineup. This hybrid approach — films available in theaters and at home — is expected return in 2022.
Many past festival venue partners are also expected back in 2022, including the Detroit Film Theatre at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Birmingham 8 Powered by Emagine, the Redford Theatre and Michigan Science Center.
The festival’s artistic team is working on the lineup now.
Freep Film Festival is an invite-based event, but its programmers are always interested in hearing about documentaries that might be a good fit. This especially includes films set in Detroit, Michigan or the Midwest, or those focused on topics of particular relevance to the region. The festival also frequently showcases documentaries created by Detroiters or Michiganders, or filmmakers who were raised in the state.
Interested filmmakers should email [email protected] with the basic details about their documentary — whether completed or in-progress. The programming team will be in touch if the film is of interest.
