Drake University hosts paint fight and Beautiful Bulldog Contest ahead of relays

Celebrations for the Drake Relays are in full swing on campus.The university held its annual paint fight Monday – it’s the first time they’ve hosted it since the pandemic.”I hope that being able to participate in one of these long traditions will really be beneficial to everyone to get the idea that we’re all back together and things are starting to return to normal,” shared Anna George, a junior at Drake.Despite the cold weather, participants could be seen wearing short sleeves and shorts to the event.”I wish it was a little bit warmer but that doesn’t stop the fun. You know here at Drake we keep it going, rain or shine,” said Lisette Villaltorres, a sophomore at the university.On the other side of campus, at the Knapp Center, the ‘Beautiful Bulldog Contest’ took place. About 30 different dogs competed for first place.KCCI sports anchor Jeff Dubrof was one of the judges. The dogs were judged on their outfits and Drake school spirit. And there was even an appearance from last year’s winner – Myrtle May.After much deliberation – the winner was announced.Bam Bam from Minnesota!His owner dressed them as characters from the movie ‘Up’ and she says she’s shocked with the winning title.”I wasn’t expecting to take home the throne but it was definitely a lot of fun,” Meggie Estby, Bam Bam’s owner said.
